Internet Provider: Cox

I have really bad fluctuating ping spikes ranging from 150 to 800 sometimes when I'm playing online games and I can't tell why. I am about 30ft away from my router. I don't know if this could be my network adapter overheating or if the adapter is just  bad I don't believe its my internet provider. I had my laptop hooked up via Ethernet to the router and got 26 ping around 45 mbps download speed and about an 8 mbps in upload speed.(ookla speedtest.net) On my pc i built i got 28 ping 13 mbps download speed and a 7 mbps in upload speed from the same speedtest. I want to know basically why I'm getting these spikes and what I can do to fix it.(Ethernet is not really an option to much crap in the way to my computer) I really don't know a lot about networking and that's why I'm here so thanks for any advice.

Unsure what power supply to pick?

Check out my HTPC build.

well i play csgo a lot and I have my max matchmaking ping set at 70 so the server shouldn't exceed 70 when i connect to a server. So no

So you are gaming via WiFi normally and that is where you experience those spikes in ping?

yea

Then your issue is most likely related to interference and also that wifi is always half duplex (it can not send and recieve data at the same time, it will either send or recieve).

WiFi is using the CSMA/CD protocol, so if a packet "collides" with another packet, the router will wait a bit before retransmitting it.

Does your hardware suppport AC and have you tested on different channels or maybe on 5Ghz?

You should try downloading inSSIDer and scan your area to see what channels are being used (this can only detect wifi channels, but interference can come from many other sources)

It can sometimes be improve by chaning the poloarization of your antennas in either end (router or computer) to see if that improves your RSSI dBm wise.
