Budget and Location: Around $2000 AUD (but I may push it), Australia

Aim - Gaming rig for stuff from AAA titles to Broforce-looking graphics games
Monitors - 1-2
Peripherals - No other peripherals needed
Why are you upgrading - It's my first PC!

The build is here as well as below

CPU: Intel i5-4690K
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Nepton 240M Liquid Cooler
Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty Z97X-KILLER Motherboard
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 1866 (2x8GB)
HDD: Western Digital 2TB
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO Series 250GB
Video Card: MSI GTX980 Gaming 4gb ($810) / ASUS Strix GTX 980 4GB ($769)
Case: Coolermaster HAF X RC-942
Power Supply: Antec "EDGE" 550w 80+Gold PSU
Optical Drive: Pioneer BDC-207DBK BluRay Combo

Comparison of MSI GTX 980 v ASUS GTX 980
It's just that the ASUS is $41 cheaper.

I have a choice of the parts from this location. Buying parts online at the moment is still equally as expensive due to the weak $AUD

So, I'd like some advice or any discussion that you may think needs to be brought to my attention. I am new to building computers. I really am not sure how to shop for a motherboard, cooler or case. I picked them because I recognise the brand or Linus reviewed it.

1. What parts if any can I replace to save some money? Locally, this is $2444. Can I make it cheaper without downgrading the GTX 980?
2. I do plan to overclock if I need to
3. Anything I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for any responses I receive.

can you get an r9 fury? for around that price of course

I'm looking, but I guess it'll be something I get online if need be.

So, I see you've changed up the Motherboard and CPU. Could you please explain to me why/ what advantages I get out of this?

I suppose I don't need the Bluray. Thanks for pointing that out. Probably 1080p, though a little future proofing wouldn't hurt?

i would go for a 390x then. The 980 is a better card than the 390x, but the 390x has more vram, that makes it more feature proof imo, and for 1080p it will be just fine.

Newer tech, but not necessarily faster, I just wouldn't buy last gen if I were building a new rig now

if i were you, i'd consider the items in this build. probably the cheapest skylake build you'll be able to get that doesn't sacrifice performance. this build is NOT ready for 980's in sli though. if you want that option, you'll have to get a more expensive motherboard and psu

edit:

this build will play 1080p games at max settings at over 60 fps
