Custom cables

Go to solution Solved by WildTurtle,

The Crossing your talking about is how some OEMs or even Branded PSUs have 2 Wires coming out of 1 pin socket. Not sure why they do this, but whatever. If you plan to sleeve those cables or make them custom, you must follow the exact pin out of your PSU or else you may damage it. Extensions are good as they make everything worry free if your PSU has strange pin outs.

I was wondering about sleeving a power supply. My understanding about making custom cables is that for an extension you do not need to cross wires, you just need to "extend" from point a on the power supply's 24 pin connector to point a on the extension's connector. While on the other hand if i am making a completely custom set of cables for a power supply I may have to cross cables, solder cables and ect. I was also wondering if all power supplies have different pinouts so that you can not make a cable that fits all power supplies. Any and all help about making custom cables and wiring would be great. My main concern is not the actual sleeving but instead the wiring.

You just need to keep track of which wire goes where and making sure you properly seal the ends, and if you're going to do it on a non modular power supply, you'll need to make the hole the wires come through wider to accommodate the sleeving.  It's relatively simple, it just takes time, patience, and some knowledge.

Is there a list of power supplies out there with good pinouts, or maybe a chart for some power supplies out there telling me the pinouts. The only reason I ask is because while I make the cables I do not want to mess with the cables that come with my power supply that way i can still use my pc while I make the custom cables.

Typically, you can just google your PSU and add "pin out diagram" to it and you'll probably find a post of it. I had to do that with the Corsair AX1200, biggest pain ever dealing with PSUs with the strangest of pin outs.

Thanks, sounds simple enough. I appreciate the speedy answers. I have been stalling with making custom cables because I have been freaking out about shoring my system and knowing nothing about wiring and things.  :D Now all I have to do is order some cables and sleeving to see what works best.

Order your cables? You should probably just get 18 gauge cabling and a crimper, if you truly want to go custom!

Yah, that is what I am talking about. I may order some 16 gauge wire from lutro0 with the thinner insulation and I may order some wire with standard insulation but colored to blend in to the sleeving so you are unable to make a distinction between the sleeve and the inner cable. I will figure it all out in the morning when i am more awake.

Ahh, good luck on your sleeving adventure! Lemme know how it goes out. Also, what kind of sleeving are you planning on ordering? MDPC?

I have no idea, I like the pet sleeving but there is a million different types it is a bit overwhelming. MDPC is highly recommended but very expensive where as lutro0, mountain mods, and a thousand other places offer similar if not identical pet sleeving. If you have any suggestions I am all ears. I was thinking about ordering a meter from a few places and see what is best and just use the sleeve to practice before i do a power supply.

and here is some of the type of cable i am looking at. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/19822/wir-95/16AWG_High_Voltage_High_Temperature_UL3239_Silicone_Rubber_Wire_-_Red.html?tl=g44c327s1704

What is the wattage on your psu?

I am thinking about getting a seasonic platinum power supply that is not more than 850 watts, probably closer to 650. I may just end up going for 18 awg wire as I have heard it is easier and usually adequate.

Yeah 18awg is typically what most people use. Try to get a PSU with a clean pinout if you can!

TryHardPajamas

You will want to check out my sleeving faq (www.lutro0customs.com)

It will provide you with a list of PSUs that are easier to sleeve.

Also I would not order that wire from Frozen as it has a silicone coating and is super floppy, you will have a pain of a time when you sleeve with it.

When you order your sleeve black should be good for any colors with the exception of white in which you will want to use white wire.
