I finished my new X99 build (5820K stock, 16GB HyperX Fury 2666Mhz DDR4, ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1, Asus 780 Ti) a few days ago. It has been freezing randomly specifically while watching Twitch streams and occasionally while installing programs. It even froze on me while trying to install Nvidia drivers. I did a Memtest overnight and after 3 passes there were no errors. I continued to use it to see what I was doing when it froze. I played some CSGO for at least 1 hour and no problems at all.

I haven't even tried to overclock it yet. I checked the temps of everything and they were fine (no overheating). In fact at load it never broke 50 C on a Cryorig R1 air cooler.

At first I thought it was an OS install issue so I reinstalled Windows 8.1 at least 2 times and it was still freezing. Then I took advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade to see if that would change anything and it still would freeze. Mind you I was still replicating it by mainly installing programs and watching Twitch streams (in Chrome and Firefox, happens on either).

The last thing I decided to do was swap out my air cooler with my H100i and my temps didn't really change that much. I think I prefer this set up for the time being because if it is a RAM issue then I don't want to have to keep removing and replacing the air cooler.

I'm at a loss for what it possibly could be. I think the next thing I will try is to do another clean install of Windows and only have the mouse and keyboard attached since I also use an external USB sound card and an external Blu Ray drive. If that doesn't help then I will do the RAM test and put it one stick at a time to see if that will do anything.

Would running the RAM at default speed of 2133Mhz rather than the stated 2666Mhz cause any issues?

No running the ram at that speed wont really cause any issues

I assume windows is installed on an SSD? HDD can sometime cause issues like this

Have you installed all the latest drivers from asus website?

Have you performed a bios upgrade?

Unplug everything (expect Mouse and Keyboard) and install your software

Test with a single DIM in

I also noticed your using an 780ti, is this second hand or from your own previous build?

CPU : i7 5820k l MB : ASRock Fatal1ty X99M KILLER/3.1 l RAM : 64GB l GPUs : GTX 970 l Case : Corsair 350D l SSD 2x250gb HDD 2x3tb Raid0 l CS750M PSU

Yes I have an 850 EVO ssd Brand new. I installed all the latest drivers. I did do a BIOS upgrade, which I should have mentioned did something odd. After it said BIOS flash success, the PC would get stuck in a power on/off cycle (After powering on, it would shut off several seconds later.) Ended up having to do a clear cmos to get it to boot up again.

Will try reinstall windows with just mouse and keyboard installed. Then will try the Single DIMM method.

Also, my 780 Ti is from my previous build and never had issues with it.

Ok a minor update but I will try to not spam this thread too many updates. I thought I would do the single DIMM test first because it would most likely be a hardware issue since the reinstall of Windows several times over didn't do anything. Before trying this, it froze twice within a 10 minute span (Second error brought up an WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD). I tried to overload Chrome with many tabs including one with Twitch on Source quality with Theater Mode and Fullscreened. Also with an Excel spreadsheet open concurrently.

Pulled out 3 of the DIMMs and am currently on one 4GB stick. Been using it for about 10-15 minutes so far and no freeze. Hopefully I figured out the issue. I hate having to troubleshoot especially if it's difficult to find any similar situations on the net.

Late night update. So i tried all the individual ram sticks in single channel mode and it didnt freeze. Tried to see if the slots were bad so i tried a stick in each of the slots and no freezing. So then i decided tp try all 4 sticks again and of course it freezes. Took out 1 stick to make it triple channel and it alsp froze. So i think its definitely the ram or tbe motherboard but i have no way of kmowimg what the cause of it is. I dont have any other DDr4 memory.

you could try going to a local PC store and see if they would offer a service to stress test your RAM (my local PC store does offer stress testing of all components so i don't see what the difference would be at your location) and then wait for the outcome. if the RAM stress test worked great then the issue most presuamably would be within the motherboard.

i hope this helps you  :)  :)

Could be incompatibility.

Try just two sticks. I have a hunch it will work fine, Then try the other two on their own, and again it will work.

You can also try and run them at 2133Mhz. 2666Mhz is still classed as overclocking, so you should at least remove it as a factor.

Also, clearing Cmos after a flash is a normal step that should be taken.

Just FYI, When you're about to flash a bios always use stock settings.

Flash one bios at a time, you shouldn't skip 5 bios' altogether.

Power off the system. unplug the system. Hold the power button for 5 seconds three times.

Remove Cmos battery for 15-30 seconds.

Put battery back in.

Plug system back in. Power system on.

Go into bios and check everything.

NEVER use a previous bios save. So if you've got 4.6Ghz saved on a profile that was from a previous bios then delete it. It's worthless now.

It's not a race to the bottom.

Alright so what I just noticed (not even sure how I missed it) is that the Auto settings on the AI OC Tuner automatically made the RAM target 2666Mhz frequency without setting XMP. Is this what it normally does? I figured it was running at default 2133MHz speed since I didn't even touch OCing the CPU yet since I was spending so much time trying to figure out what was wrong with it.

So right before noticing this the computer froze in Triple Channel mode. So then I manually set 2133MHz and am trying to replicate the freeze again. So far nothing.

Ok so I put all 4 sticks back in and then manually set 2133MHz. I guess either the motherboard doesn't like all 4 sticks at 2666MHz or the set is bad (unlikely). Would you guys say that it's a motherboard issue that it doesn't like 2666MHz?
