basic NAS Questions

So i essentially am looking for a device to store home files on 2TB of space will be enough, that can also stream to my LG smart TV.

will a NAS do this. is their a prebuilt that will do this for a decent budget?

if not i can build one as i have built PC's before

thanks

Chances are your television supports DLNA, so you should be able to find a NAS that supports it as well. Some come with storage, while others are "diskless", meaning you need to provide your own hard drives.

Wife's build: Amethyst - Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X570-P, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 12GB, Corsair Obsidian 750D, Corsair RM1000 (yellow label)

My build: Mira - Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB EVGA DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X470-PRO, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3, beQuiet Dark Base 900, EVGA 1000 G6

Hey there kitobeirens,

A regular NAS should be able to do that. I could suggest checking out WD My Cloud as it is very easy to set up and manage and should do the job perfectly fine: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CRCUqF

Building one on your own can be a bit cheaper in some cases but you don't get support for it and is harder to set up and manage later on. Self-built NASs have the advantage of upgrade-ability, though.

thats sounds ideal. would i be able to use an external disk drive and stream the disk directly to other devices or would i need to rip it first?

You can connect external drives to the USB port of the NAS and stream from there :) it has a USB3.0 port on the back side next to the network port where you can attach other external drives (portable or desktop) and expand the drive's capacity or configure a backup to or from it. All the files from the external drive will be visible as a separate folder in the NAS.
