Recovering Hard disk space

Go to solution Solved by EliasNM,

Well couldnt he just remove everything then go from there then?

I recommend exactly that to reformat.

Hi There:

Once again a noob question

Does anyone know how to recover space on a hdd after a botched formatting attempt?

Was formatting a 4tb Disk and left the pc as it would obviously take a while, Girlfriend subsequently turned the pc off midway through the operation.

The BIOS is recognizing the drive as having a 4tb capacity however Windows 10 is recognising it as having a max capacity of 3.2tb.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Hey there marr30192,

If you don't need the data from the HDD (or are able to back it up), the best way to reset a drive is to fill it completely with zeros. This way anything that is not hardware-related damage, will be set back to normal and should clear the mistakes. I could suggest using WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool in order to do that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=NAJpJv . Do have in mind that after you start this process, the data on the drive will be irrecoverable

Do post back if you have other questions :)
