I have this and it does me perfectly fine for gaming.  The mic is.. gaming quality, and it sounds pretty good to the untrained ear (I need a trained ear to test these headphones)

EDIT ~ may I add incredibly comfortable, I can play for hours even with glasses and not be bothered.

I personally have a headset called the Sentey Soniq Boom. great headset with virtual 7.1 surround, good overall sound, best i've heard (though i've only heard these and some cheapo headsets before) and the mic is very good for a headset, which is rare. i've seen two that fit the bill, one being the Soniq Booms cousin, and the other being a different design overall, which another guy, possibly audiophile, enjoys with pride on these forums.

these have built in DAC units, making the sound experience that much better over an onboard sound card with interference from all the powered on electrical components inside your computer.

Fake surround sound is gross. Also, I'm sure they don't sound too good.

No to both... (For the Senn, it's mainly because Chrome/Shiny is gross)

Icky, and by the way, you're 100% wrong about the headphones having a better dac than a modern mobo (provided the mobo isn't broken.)

Either of those are very good. The first is literally a HyperX cloud without the mic and the second is an open backed hyperX cloud.

In this case, you will be best served getting a separate mic (despite the fact that you'll be going up to ~$60. The sound quality will be FAR better than any all in ones you can get at the price...)

Mic: http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1441167857&sr=8-1&keywords=zalman+zm-mic1

Decent enough for the budget and the price it costs. Oh, and if she doesn't need a mic, all the better :)

None of the thing anybody has mentioned and nothing good in that price range.

Above is about the best you can get for close to the budget, no?

firstly, the person was asking for general opinions for options, secondly, this person, and thier sister, may have different opinions and tastes than you do, so saying anything is gross or icky is a bit immature, especially if you prefer something completely different. and lastly, until you've actually used some of these headsets or headphones yourself you don't know their mic qualities or their quality of bass and sound in the actual earcups. so saying anything such as that is a bit harsh to all of us who have, what we feel and think and enjoy, good headsets.

Also, i may have said the wrong thing in general whenn it comes to the DAC within the Sentey's the on board the motherboard sound, that's actually good, mespecially to today's standards as they are completely shielded around the motherboard, but powered through it very well. what i had actually MEANT was, a sound card that you plug into your computer, a dedicated one that goes in like a graphics card in the PCI express plugs. also, my Soniq Boom's are not icky, they are very well made, solid, and ssound amazing, the 7.1 works very well too, so saying it's virtual surround is gross is just you being petty. not everyone can get real 7.1 in headsets, and anything that comes close with 5.1 REAL surround (there are devices like that, one of them from Sentey to boot) is hard to come by and not cheap.

again, this is someone asking for suggestions, so suggest your set, and let them choose based off the information available. do not outright bash everyone elses choice for your own to be chosen.

I'm gonna reply to each paragraph individually, because I think that will work best with the length here.

It may be a bit immature to say that something is gross or icky, but, well, I never claimed to be mature in the first place, did I? But honestly, and this particularly pertains to girls in my experience, do you want to look like a 12 year old boy? Chrome and shiny things are gross because they are fingerprint magnets, and I bet you use your fingers to put the headphones on your head! Also, seriously, most of these have a boy-gamer design, which, I would bet, is not very attractive to OPs sister.

I suppose that the mic thing is a fair point, but let's be honest here, at the very least, the Zalman will be equal in sound quality to any of the headsets in this budget, and I would bet that it will sound better.

I don't know the specifics of the sound quality that each of these headsets represents, it's true. But I do know that there are VERY few headsets that compete with the Takstar Pro 80/ it's open version/HyperX clouds/whatever you want to call them in any price point, and I have never heard, or even seen a claim for a headset that is better in the sub-$100 price point. Also, the whole thing about people thinking that the sound they have in their headsets is good... Let's think about beats for a second. Most owners of beats (who actually like them/think they're good), and I'm talking about the first generation here, liked them because they were the best they had ever heard. And yet, who among us wouldn't hesitate to tell the owners of the beats that they shouldn't have bought them, and that they could have gotten significantly better sound for the price? That's all I'm doing, only it isn't over beats, and it's at a lower price point. The intent and the reasoning are still the same, so you can hardly infer that it's overly harsh.

A dedicated sound card is just as isolated as anything you could get on a motherboard. And my point about you being wrong on that still stands. A dedicated sound card/on board audio of a modern, properly functioning motherboard are going to be noticeably and significantly better than anything in a USB headset, not to mention, USB has its own set of issues, but that's a whole other can of beans.

I'm not going to argue about whether or not your headphones are icky; it's a matter of personal preference, as far as looks are concerned, but for sound quality, I'm sure they aren't the best for the price. As a general rule, any headset/headphone that advertises 7.1 surround is going to be worse than a standard stereo equivalent (Yes, this even stands for something like the HyperX clouds. The first one is better than the second one.). I don't really believe you that they are well made, or that they sound "amazing." Although, I do have to admit, I'm impressed that they actually published the sensitivity for those headphones, not that it matters, since you can't actually input an analog signal... Virtual surround is gross (excluding the stuff that's built into games). And yes, ANYONE can get your "real" 7.1, all they have to do is download Razer's surround software, since, you know, it's free. Also, as far as the whole "5.1 REAL surround"... That's not actually a thing in headphones... It is literally impossible to do. For proof, I would encourage you to read this wonderful thread: 7.1 Headphones?

again, this is someone asking for suggestions, so suggest your set, and let them choose based off the information available. do not outright bash everyone elses choice for your own to be chosen.

I mean, I could easily bash those headphones harder. Regardless, all I was trying to do was actually inform OP with the opinions of someone (I'm talking about myself here) who has pretty damn extensive experience with a variety of headphones. Also, I watch and read reviews of headphones for fun Audio is my thing, it's what I look at all day. I said what I said to help the OP make the best decision possible for the price listed. I'm providing the OP with the information available. Something that the previous posts failed to do, in case you hadn't noticed.

Although, I would like to say that I appreciate that you listed your previous experience with headphones, so the OP could see, to an extent, what your version of "good sound" is.

i understand you are trying to be helpful, informative, and trying to be technical as well, and i understand you are an audio person, whilst i myself am not i am not one to say anyone is wrong or not because of my experiences. That being said, i also know that, if i do have knowledge on something that no one else has, that it is not my place to say they are wrong. having a strong belief, opinion, or experience that tells you what is right and wrong for you in your life is fine, and suggesting things to others with that information, given the facts you have acquired to build your thoughts on, is fine.

my whole post has been about one thing, and one thing only. however rude you might think this is i mean it in a respectful way, but you obviously are an egotistical and rather rude 'specialist' who thinks that whatever anyone else suggests is pure crap compared to your own opinions, and you will bash them in any way possible to do so. if you had given this person your opinions normally, such as saying "this is what i find best, due to my own experiences, the data i've compiled, and what i myself know on the technology available with the credentials from a sort of resume in my profile, given the budget, these might fit best" then that would have been a great post, i'd have liked it, and i'd have suggested they listen to you most of all. in fact, given your credentials, i'd still say, with your experience, that you would be the one to listen to throughout this entire thread. that does not give you the right to tell people they are wrong in ways that make you seem superior to others, alongside bashing of their opinions. of which, even with your credentials, if someone finds their headsets give them amazing quality sound, better than any other device or setup, then why tell them they are wrong? i read the post you given me, and it seems you've skipped the "everyone's ears and brains work different" part.

as for the surround sound, part of me wants to say you are a razer fanboy for suggesting razer's software instantly and saying it's the only software for surround sound. with my sentey's, the soniq boom set, it's 7.1 is very good, everytime i heard something behind me, it has been where i thought it was. and this is right for me, although may not be for others. the page says that real 5.1 is impossible, because you're paying for much smaller drivers where a bigger more appropriate one would be. Sentey's 5.2 headset, the Harmoniq Pro, has 3 drivers in each earcup, in 3 different sizes. the biggest being 40mm, a standard size that others seem to say is good. the middle one's, being the back of the earcup (i suppose to register behind you) are 30mm. and the smallest, being places ahead fo the 30mm drivers, for frontal support i would assume, are 27mm. so whilst the last 2 drivers seem to make the page's claims accurate, the fact it gives standard sized 40mm drivers with them kind of cracks the support. so real surround sound in headsets are not impossible, however hard to find, and whilst i myself havent tried them, i plan to due to the fact i want to find out for myself. because i am skeptical of 5.1, but i would rather become more knowledgeable than to fumble around in ignorance. instead of listening to others who claim to be right, im going to use my own experiences. because mine are different than others.

this is the last thing i say here, because i don't want this to devolve from a discussion into an argument, because being told im completely wrong no matter what is kind of irritating, and quite rude. i wish you the best regardless of what you tell me.

Fair enough. (Honestly, I think a big part of this is that I haven't slept in 25 hours, which is incredibly unusual for me, so I'm completely exhausted...)

I'm hardly a fanboy. The main thing about the razer software is that it's free. I don't know of any other free surround sound software packages that work as well as the Razer one. Also, I personally don't actually use any of the different versions of the software because I spend most of my time listening to music, toggling between the software and normal audio would just end up being a pain for me.
