Possible Hard drive failure

So my girlfriends desktop has inconsistent boots and is beyond slow for no reason. No malware, registry issues, decent cpu and power supply. I am thinking that the Hard Drive is going but hoping there is a free software to test it to find out. I am additionally afraid to clone the drive in case it is not a failure and could transfer the issue.

Go to event viewer and see if there are any disk errors in system.

There is a free software called Crystal Disk Info.

so Crystal Disk says everything is okay. Trying the event viewer. If I use a boot windows 10 flash drive, and do clean install, will that give me the fresh install I am looking for as a plan b?

Had one critical error in past 7 days and 300 warnings mostly in device manager
