Help on selecting a platform

Go to solution Solved by Wired360,

The 5820k has 28 PCI-E Lanes while the 5930K has 40. Running 2 way SLI and a PCI-E SSD should be enough but if you want extra PCI-E Lanes for more bandwith, be my guest

I'll probably go with the 5930K if I find it on sale by then, incase I add any other pci-E accessory. I think this is a good and solid build.

Wow...

Invest on a custom cooled GTX 980 Ti. The Palit Jetstream edition are a step above the reference coolers.

I'll stick with the G1, especially the ever so slight lower thermals, and price being less

On another note, I'm coming from an IPS display and wanted to know if I should stick with IPS or go with a 144Hz monitor? I looked at the Dell U2515 and I think you can change the refresh rate to 75Hz... Any opinions?

I'm looking to build a new system this winter and having a little difficulty deciding on the platform. Note that this is a full system as I am moving away from a laptop to a desktop with no peripherals,

The main reason is the laptop is lacking after 3+ years and dosen't really move.

The new system will be mainly for gaming and storage (family pics/vids etc.).

  • For gaming I'm starting off with a single gpu and upgrade later to dual or replace the card (2-3 years).
  • For the storage I will be using 4 drives in raid 10 for redundancy. The black and evo drive are for games only and the m.2 is for the OS.
  • I expect the system to serve me for at least 5 years (with the only upgrade being gpu, ram or storage)
  • If possible I may leave the system on for extended periods as a server for file transfers and remote desktop

I appreciate any help I can get, this is teh build I have so far (used Z170 as a placeholder)

Also no z170 board packs enough sata for your requirements.

Why not an X99 build???

Also no z170 board packs enough sata for your requirements.

^^^ This

It says in PCPP link itself.

2 additional SATA 3 Gb/s compatible ports are needed.
The motherboard M.2 slot #0 shares bandwidth with a SATA Express port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA Express port is disabled.

I'd select EVGA SuperNOVA P2 power supply. Does the same job as corsair's. EVGA is cheaper.

Get Windows 7 Pro for cheap amount and Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free.

NZXT Kraken X61 ftw!

Also 2 BD drives?? Why???

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

If you're getting all those things, just go with X99 and spend $200 more on the build, like going with this:

Yeah it is a bit much but just got married and got incharge of storing pictures and vids from both families (3Tb in total), wanted room for our own pics and vids. Also all pics are in raw format so for example our wedding pics are 60Gb...

Yeah but on the spec sheets the 170s have 6 sata and 2-4 sata express ports but pcpp dosen't show them...

Im debating the EVGA, its been brought up quite a bit and will look into it, I went with Corsair for reliability and warranty, used them on other builds (for family and a client)

I forgot I could still pick up windows 7 and just upgrade, will do!

Figured the H110GTX being about the same price and a slightly larger rad

Needed just one and was gonna do the other as a dvd drive to make copies for the fam, but price isnt bad so gonna grab two. And all the vids are on bluray. (Home videos have to go to two seperate households so easier to just copy and send them).

I was wondering if its worth going with a 5930K for the extra pci lanes? I think the x99 might be the best way to go, just wanted to be sure I get the most for my buck in case of cpu/mb so I don't need to upgrade for a bit, Also figured new ports (usb 3.1, etc.) I can add on by pci express cards

I mean it's $200 extra.

If you're ready to spend $200 extra just for the PCI lanes, get that.

Basically 5820K and 5930K performs the similar, since both are 6 core cpus, and the clock speed difference is 200mHz on stock, 100mHz on Turbo.
