computer doesn't detect hdd

Go to solution Solved by Guest Philosophy,

Make sure SATA and Power are seated,  try a diffrent SATA Port/Connector and then make sure drive is working by plugging it into another PC.

EDIT: Same applies with IDE.

Hey there. I've rarely ever had a problem posted here but now I have a really weird problem.

post-238376-0-73158400-1440605062_thumb.

What is happening? Sometimes though it does detect the hdd.

But most of the time it doesn't.

What is happening? Help!

Specs if really necesarry

CPU: Intel Pentiium Dual Core 3.00 GHz @ 3.00 GHz

HDD: 400 gb

RAM: DDR3 4gb

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 210 Overclocked

Idk what is happening

I believe this is not a SATA drive but rather an IDE one.

Only thing I can suggest is reconnecting everything, try different cables.  Also ensure that the master/slave jumper is in the correct place?

Hard to troubleshoot as modern motherboards can't take IDE drives.

reset BIOS.

check all the pins on the SATA/Power connectors on the back of the HDD are all there (true story, I have an SSD with the cable super glued in place because it for some reason broke a pin off the SSD. Kingston Hyper-X if anyone is wondering)

PC: i7-3770k, GTX 670, 16gb 1600mhz, SSDs only, Corsair K70, Razer Deathadder, Windows 10.

Do SATA drive's still have Master/Slave jumpers? I hated those things...

Nope, they are all direct connections.

On a side note, what's everyone's problem with master/slave jumpers?  Back when drive speed was slow as heck it was a practical solution to use two devices on one cable..

Everything I said, applies for IDE.

No , Only IDE as it was capable of sharing a ribbon. Now we have direct connections instead.

I would think it's either a dead HDD (as it sometimes connects, or the ribbon is failing.

It's not a race to the bottom.

That's what I thought, till I looked at a SATA HDD I had lying around and noticed next to the Power connector it has what looks to be the old jumper headers, although no actual jumper and no diagram relating to it. Probably something for diagnostics though?

And yeah I guess you're right, I do kind of miss having 2 drives on one cable.

If your IDE drives are set to cable select for the jumpers, try manually setting them to master/slave depending on their position on the cable. Else, try a replacement cable? HDD itself could be going bad as well, as i'm guessing it's quite old.

How do I manually set them to master/slave?
