What mother board do you have? If p67/Z68 or Z77 chipset, grab a used 2600K and a good cooler, overclock it to 4.5GHz+ and call it a day.

With a $300 budget, you won't be able to get anything better than that.

If your chipset is not one of the ones listed, get a z68/Z77 mobo as well. You will stay below the $300 mark in any case.

amd isnt worth going to .... and for what you have to spend your best bet would be a i5 4690k which should run about 220 and will leave just under 100 for a mobo but you should prolly save up a bit more to get a better board

@exmich I believe this is a better combination this CPU performs almost like an i7, has 8 threads etc.

Yes and no

Gaming performance is great but it can be beat by the I5-4690k OC'd

However there are applications that use single threaded performance a lot, but most of them are rendering and video editing situations

The motherboard is also rendered useless since you can't maximize its overclock capabilities

So might as well go for a cheaper H81, H87 or H97

This exact motherboard is a great deal costs 59.99 $ from 99$ and it fits his budget PERFECTLY, I know he could get a locked one etc but he won't pay less and get worse, provided the discount doesn't end ^^ It's the 2nd cheapest full atx lga 1150 motherboard on partpicker, he can't get any better than this for the money

Anyway with what he wrote "I don't care if intel or amd" I assumed he's not too familiar with tech, so getting a good overclock might prove quite challenging to him and he might damage his CPU, the xeon prevents that giving more raw performance with a locked multiplier =) Also it's just a better CPU for just slightly more but still within the budget

@exmich get the xeon setup, it's the best CPU of all of those and fits your budget. It is basically impossible to get a better setup than what I linked within 300$ margin :)

You're gaming, right?

So, sell the i5 for $70/$80, the 7950 for $120/$130, that will give you a 500$ budget.

Grab a 3570k for +/-$200 and a used r9 290X for $250/$300: you'll have a great gaming rig.

The only things that is a good "UPGRADE" is a Skylake but those cost if you want a bit better there is 3rd gen Intel, FX or 4th gen Intel but the two last ones are kinda pricy I bet you can find used 3rd gen but that upgrade is like 15% better max? :(
