Quick question, I was hoping someone could explain how the graphics will work. The Intel Xeon E3 1230 V3 does not support a GPU. Does that mean i have to purchase a graphics card as well? I am going to use this processor in conjunction with the AsRock Z87M Extreme 4. Or will the motherboard provide the graphics?

Xeon based processors don't have an integrated graphics solution. It's more aimed at the professional market, where people need high compute power and workstation-type graphic horsepower. If you want integrated graphics and most of the compute power, go for the Z87 - 4770k platform.

EDIT: If you want more aggressive pricing to compare with the E3 1230 V3, then the 4670k CPU would be paramount. http://ark.intel.com/compare/75048,75123,75054 (CPU comparison).

if your not planning on getting a nice gpu and want the xeon just buy a small standard gpu that runs off of pci express like a 7750 or something. Im sure there are some great cheap options that will destroy igpu performance....

Well maybe you can suggest a solution to my inexperience.

I am trying to build a home server for learning project. I have a friend that is recommending I learn how to set up a file server, vmware and a dns server. I'm struggling trying to figure out how much to spend on that. Currently I seem to be at about $1500.00. Do you have a recommendation for a server cpu and motherboard? Thanks in advance.

I was thinking about that processor as well, due to the fact that I want to have a quad core processor that I can dedicate cores to each server. Thanks.

Xeons are intended for workstation and server scenarios where a GPU may not be necessary, therefore you will need a dedicated GPU. If you haven't purchased the CPU I would recommend either the 4770K if you intend to edit video or work with 3D or a 4670K if you intend to solely game on your system.

It's what it's intended for but Xeon e3-1230v3 is just 4770 without IGPU if you use it with normal motherboard lga 1150.

Any 1150 mobo will do.

You need a dedicated GPU if you want good experience, anything like 620GT-640GT (just garbage, won't play games well) will be sufficient. 650Ti or better for gaming but Xeon is i7 so you can really really use any GPU, even most high-end.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?
