Cat5e if it's just for surfing the web; if you have a NAS at home, you might benefit from Cat6 depending on the throughput of your router

It's completely blown out of proportion. Also if you're the least bit worried about data gathering then you should go live in a cave a 1000Km from the nearest establishment simply because every device and every entity gathers information these days. In the current era privacy is just fallacy and nothing more.

Yeah you're gonna want Cat5e, Cat6 is only really useful if you have a 10 gigabit card or have a bunch of power cables and data cables running alongside it which could cause crosstalk. Probably be cheaper and more of a clean finish if you crimp your own or use wall faceplates but that depends on if you're confident whipping out the tool kit.

Don't listen fully to adam. Cat5/5e/6/6a/7 all have 8 conductors and 4 pairs. You could go with Cat5e and get gigabit speeds. Same with Cat6, Cat6a, and Cat7. Cat7 and Cat6a is crazy overkill. Normal Cat5 can only go upto 10/100 speeds. Cat6 is capable of 10g speeds, but you most likely don't have 10g hardware.

My native language is C++
