Just the computer without OS, monitor, etc, you were spending about $500. This would be MUCH better for $500.

The i3 will not only beat the Athlon in games and single threaded tasks, but also multi threaded tasks.

That build seems fine.

I would get an SSD and it will run well.

maybe get a R9 285 or R9 280x instead of the 960.

SSD at this price point makes no sense, you would be sacrificing GPU power/something else. R9 285 is obsolete, the R9 380 has replaced it. The 280X, while giving better performance, is more expensive as well as being essentially a furnace when it comes to heat.

You are right about the SSD, but wrong about the GPU.

The R9 285 is better than the 960 and around the same price and has more VRam, I think that 960 has to little Vram.

Agree but 380/280 is only a bit better and it needs more power its hotter.

The R9 380 is the same thing as the 285 but a newer generation with SLIGHT efficiency improvements. It also has the same VRAM as the 960, 2GB.

It's a dual core some games don't even run on dual cores now

'Some' being Fallout 4 and that is IT. It also has hyperthreading, meaning that it can still multitask pretty well. The performance is just so much better in games. Look at this article:

http://www.techspot.com/review/1017-best-budget-gaming-cpu/

A 3.2Ghz non-hyper threaded CPU of the same architecture performs better than the Athlon. How well do you think a 3.6Fhz Hyperthreaded CPU is going to do against that? Very well.

The 380 is not hotter and it does not need more power. In terms of raw performance, it goes 280X>380, however the 380 is often the better choice because of LOWER heat and power consumption.

AthlonIIX4_640_TV1.gif

thief-ftv.pngamd_athlon_x4_860k-chart.jpg

Firstly, the first graph and 3D mark do not matter as they are synthetic and mean nothing for real world performance. Secondly, for the second graph the model of I3 listed is slightly lower spec than the one I was suggesting, as is the Athlon. So it is safe to say the Athlon wins there by .1 of a millisecond max, which will make no notable difference. Battlefield 4 is against the G3258 which is substantially weaker than the i3. Note you have listed no foe benchmarks, because the i3 wins in those.

with an athlon... no you are not going to get 60 frames at ultra even without msaa but at high settings... yeah you will

athlon have such a bad frame time variance, i wouldnt consider it gaming cpu at all.

for multiplayer, it will take a dump.

if we are talking singleplayer bf4, 60fps easy.

compensating crap cpu with good gpu is just stupid. a 280 can play gta 5 at med settings 70fps average, athlon will bottleneck it to 46, while if you put it at 1440p, it will play at 45.

this bottleneck could be avoided at a fraction of a cost of a whole PC, you can easily fit better cpu in 400+ $ build just by tweaking

give me 30 minutes, i come back with pcpartpicker build

Will happily take a build under $600 that has WiFi and a os and can get 60+ fps in bf4. xD

your build is 823$ with rebates and 773$ without

could you tell me real price limits?

currently i am fitting i5 4460 into the build

btw are you a student? you can get students key and save money for gpu and cpu.

also i have to warn you psu, keyboard and mouse, and headset are low quality, it will work tho.
