Is 620 Watts Overkill?

Go to solution Solved by Grrizz,

-snip-

500W would run that no problems but if there isn't much difference in price between that and the 620W go with the 620W.

I've run a 3770K + GTX970 on a 450W :P

Hey There!

So I'm creating a build and this is where the classic question comes in.

How much power does my build need?

I've used two different calculators and I've got two different results. And I'm wondering is 500watts oke? Or is 620 Watts? Or are they both overkill? (note, CPU is overclocked to 4.2 on each calculator and outervision.com was overclocked to 4.2 and gpu core oc'ed by +100mhz and memory clock by +200)

http://powersupplycalculator.net says that I need 489 watts.

So would I be pushing the boundaries with a 500 watt psu? Or would I be over doing it with a 620 watt?

even with broken links, 620 will be fine and it will give you extra room if you want to add another card or something that will make the build require more than 500w

Use PcPartpicker

Just put in all your parts and it will compute the wattage for you

Neither of your links work for me.

Try the now maybe? And btw, I'm not gonna be adding another card since my board don't support sli.

For something like that, 600W is ideal, 620W working just fine as well.

If anything, it's pretty much perfect, since the 500W PSUs don't always go to 500W. 620W is more or less ideal for what you want.

I plugged in my 4670k and 980ti, both overclocked, ran the computer on folding@home, and I didn't break 400W. I would say 620w is overkill.

550w is ideal for single GPU setups, but there's nothing wrong with getting a higher wattage PSU if the best quality PSU you can get at a good price.
