Hey guys. I was wondering whether you could help me decide on this.

I'm currently considering a gaming rig build that contains a core i5 and a gtx 970, which sits nicely within my budget.

However I recently got a bit more money to expand the budget. I'm now considering whether to upgrade my CPU to a core i7 or simply getting a better graphics card. With the recommended system requirements for Metal Gear Solid 5 being a core i7, and the general talk i've been hearing about future games being more CPU dependent, which should i go for?

I only the need the pc to run games at 1080p, and I realize the gtx970 is more than capable of that right now.

I guess my real question is, which option, the i7 CPU or a better graphics card (gtx 980 i guess), will have better future compatibility and be more long-term durable?

Thanks in advance guys :D

Usually GPU last longer since CPUs tend to have a new sockets often.

Id say the CPU, plenty of people are still running Sandy/Ivy for gaming but there aint many using GPU's from 2010 in comparison (IMO)

the i5 is a very strong cpu and it will last you at least 3-4 years(look at sandy bridge cpu's, they're still going strong)

todays games are barely "utilising" 2 cores from a cpu and by how things are advancing, 4 cores will be enough for gaming for quite some time

i'd personally get a better gpu(like a 980 or 980ti)

The i5 will last long enough without bottlenecking the 980, so I'd say go for that configuration. The problem is that you might run into performance issues with a 970, whereas a 980 will still do fine paired with an i5.
