How much ram do i need?

Since freenas is stored in the ram and it takes up about 4gb and I have 8gb of ram do i need more? Is it 1gb of ram per tb with the os subtracting 4 or just not including the os?

How much? All of it of course. What memory are you using now ?

ECC M8! I already had a thread on ecc vs ddr3 not ddr4 though. I am not likely to be hit by a cosmic ray.

If you are running dual channel get another 2x4gb, so a total of 16gb.

i have one stick atm. I would get an 8x2 kit of 16gb ram. my ram is borrowed from my workstation.

2GB of eVram (gpu)
4GB of ram
500GB of hdd
 
but the actual gamer pc recommendations are
4GB of eVram (gpu)
8GB of ram
1TB of hdd

If you can get 2 x 8GB, you should be good. 16GB will cover a lot with FreeNAS (Unless you have a super large hard drive array). 8GB is kind of the minimum I would say.

 

Also, yeah, ECC is very expensive stuff to use. I remember the 2x16GB DDR4 kit cost me $330. That's not including the cost of the C series motherboard (Which costs a lot).
