Hey guys quick question, with usb 3.1 would that be a complete hardware upgrade or would it be a software upgrade for the usb 3.0 ports now. If a hardware upgrade, would usb 3.1 bays (5.25 ones in the front of the case) work with motherboards atm?

I don't think anybody actually knows, but it shouldn't really be a reason to upgrade.

While you won't be able to tap into the full 10Gbps speeds unless you're using hardware built specifically with USB 3.1 in mind, the new specification will be backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, meaning all your current USB cords and accessories will work just fine with USB 3.1-enabled devices.

I believe it requires hardware upgrade, and as for the other question, no idea.

As qwertywarrior said, a USB 3.1 device will work in a USB 3.0 port, but they will only run at the current 3.0 speed. If you want to use the full 10Gbps speed, then you need a USB 3.1 port (on for example your motherboard or in an add-on card) as well as a USB 3.1 enabled device (such as an external hard drive).

USB 3.0 should be plenty for almost any kind of device though, even external SSDs.

A good analogy would be USB 3.0 vs 2.0.

Isn't USB 3.0 bottlenecking these external SSDs though? Either that or they haven't become popular enough to warrant some impressive R&D.

Yes that's a perfect comparison. USB 3.1 is to USB 3.0 like USB 3.0 was to USB 2.0.

USB 3.0 has a maximum bandwidth of 5Gbps and when you can thinks like overhead for the protocol and such into account you end up with about 4Gbps of bandwidth. That's enough for 512MB/s read/write speed. You would have to have a very high end SSD to reach those kinds of speeds, and even then it would only top out at that if you write a very big file sequentially.
