Windows 10 Question.

viliuks

I know you are getting bored with windows 10 topics, I'm sorry about it.

Back to the question. When upgrading/installing windows 10 does it format the drive, or just replaces the old OS with the new one?

The default is an upgrade, you have the option to do a full reinstall if you like but it's exceptionally difficult to do it by accident. The update does not format the data; All applications and settings transfer over.

don't forget to get rid of windows.old folder after upgrading as it takes like 20GB space

How come? Does it deny access when trying to delete it manually with say SHIFT+Del?

Thanks :)

Just putting on my tech support hat here for a second... Even though it's not designed to delete data doesn't mean it can't in exceptional circumstances. If you have data you cannot live without back it up before proceeding. Errors happen... I've updated 5 machines without a single issue myself but you never know.

Its just a hassle to setup stuff to connect to my jobs server to do stuff on. Anyways, I guess its backup time and upgrade :P

What's the difference between deleting it manually/regularly?

I just read your comment, so never mind.

Oh..

It seems like I still have a lot to learn before I can call myself computer/tech knowledgeable..

Don't worry, the only tech people who don't need to constantly keep learning are retired. It's impossible to know everything and whether or not you can delete Windows.old is low on the importance scale because it doesn't come up very often and a quick Google for how to delete it will come up with how to use Disk Cleanup to do it.
