IIRC the two main ones were GUIMiner and CUDAMiner but don't waste your time unless you have an ASIC these days. Double clicking mining.exe once isn't much of a hobby ;)

The thrill of knowing you piece of hardware is combined with others around the world solving a problem for a small bit of money that you can say I earned by mining! Yea it's not even a penny but it's something! It's the mentality of it that counts!

*taking a net loss while doing so... you need to factor in equipment and power costs, power alone will net you a loss.

If you weren't doing it late 2013/early 2014 then you missed the train if you intend on using computer hardware (even then there was no point in mining Bitcoin, it was all about the altcoins).

If you want to feel good about contributing to something greater, as @Windows2000 said, start folding.
