Hello. I'm wondering what's the difference between the Z170 motherboards. Right now the one that fits my budget is the Gigabyte Z170-HD3P and it has all the features I need. Is it good for overclocking a 6600k or a 6700k ?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5800X GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080 12GB + Motherboard: Asus Crosshair VIII Hero

Case: Asus ROG Strix Helios Gundam Edition Power Supply: Asus ROG Thor 850P

That is a low end budget board and while it still manages to have a USB type C connector it does not support 2way SLI though it can do 2 way crossfire.

I have not seen any reviews that hsow the quality of its overclocking yet. My concern on lower end boards is that the componenets will not be as good as the higher end ones and thus not work as well when pushed, but if I had a tight budget, on paper the board looks OK.

I might go with the Asus Z170-A , Which one would you recommend?

We still don't really know which boards are best for OC'ing.  However with lower end boards its not really at the for front of features.  You will probably be able to get a o.k mild stable OC, but not as high as if you have a MOBO designed for durability/OC'ing.  The Asus is probably a good all rounder, the MSI KraitA is also in the same price range so it deserves a look as well.

I agree there isnt enough known yet, all we can do is look at the few reviews out there and the board features. My personal pick is going ot be the ASUS Maximus Hero, but thats a lot mor emoney than what you are looking at.

The ASUS Z170-a or the pro are good choices as it the MSI boards in that price range

That is a valid point, I tend to buy based on features, but low end boards typically have lower end power circuits and you have no way of knowing if they will last as long when being overclocked at the edge of what is possible. I have run into this with Power supplies,  Corsair high end Power supplies are great their low end are crap.

In the end a board needs to have the features you want and support the devices you plan to use, if it does all that take a shot and see if it works for you. Oh and in some cases it needs to be the correct color :P
