1. Budget & Location
$4500 NZD (New Zealand Dollars).

I am only going to buy from companies in NZ - Shipping from overseas is really not an option as it adds heaps to the cost. I am going to try and price match what I can.

2. Aim
Gaming at 4K. I want to go with Skylake (Cause why not?), I have not kept up with the most current hardware as of yet, but I would feel most confortable putting my money into an i7-6700K - Please contest this if you want - I am a noob and want to learn, just don't say "No" please back it up.

3. Monitors
1 x 4K ASUS PB287Q Monitor.

4. Peripherals
Still need the monitor - but I have the mouse and keyboard.

5. Why are you upgrading?

First Build, only upgrading from a Laptop. Still have the laptop for work, but the desktop is for my enjoyment.

Parts that I have picked that start this off:

CPU - Intel Core i7-6700K    -    $599.00

CPU Cooler -   Corsair  Hydro Series H100i GTX    -   $229.00

Motherboard -  Asus  Z170-Pro Gaming Intel Z170 Skylake ATX    -   $369.00

RAM - G .SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4-19200)     -   $259.00

SSD - SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB     -   $219.00

HDD - Western Digital WD20EZRX Caviar Green 2TB SATA3 6Gb/s 64MB Cache OEM    -   $129.00

Graphics Card - Gigabyte GTX 980Ti 6GB GAMING G1    -   $1399.00

NOTE: I might be adding another 980ti to help run at 4K.

Case - Fractal Design Define R5 Mid Tower Case - Black    -   $229.00

Power Supply - Corsair HXi Series HX750i High-Performance ATX Power Supply    -   $289.00

Monitor - ASUS PB287Q    -   $899.00

If something is wrong or incompatable then please no flaming.

Thanks,

Kiwi.

That expensive motherboard and i7 are unnecessary. Get an i5 and cheap mobo and invest in a bigger SSD. For gaming, the i7 is barely better, it only adds hyper-threading and a slight clock speed boost which does almost nothing for gaming.

The motherboard is a cheaper one for the skylake processor :-| Thanks for your opinion! I was thinking i5, but with some games that need more CPU power, would it not be better to have more cores/threads?

No need for more than 4 thread.

Most games use less then 4 more thread and very few use more

i7s have no more cores, threads don't matter (much).

If I were you, I would go with a very good 1440p monitor, rather than 4K. 1 980Ti is going to struggle, whereas with a IPS 1440p 144Hz Display, you would be able to max out details and get over 60fps in games.

Ah, I should have mentioned, I might be putting another 980ti in further down the track, that is why the PSU is 750W (From what I have read, that would be enough for 2)

Sorry for not adding that to the main post - doing it now.

Yada yada yada did you not hear key words? 4K.

you don't need to install your entire p*** collection on the SSD.

The build is good. The HX series is a bit pricey, perhaps switch to a EVGA PSU? (If cheaper) if its not, the HX series PSU is fine.

One last word of advice, 4k = i7 Must

i7s have no more cores, threads don't matter (much).

in 4K you will notice a difference especially in CPU heavy games.

I could go with a different PSU, but HX is good, I have not read up on EVGA PSU's - I will add that to the reading list.

Thanks for that advice.

Now, what is your opinion about the 750W power supply. Could it handle 2 980ti's?

Get the 980Ti from Amazon much cheaper

Amazon doesn't sell stuff like that in New Zealand. Only in North America and the UK they do.

The difference is likely because of the clock speed which can be made equal or better on an overclock-able i5. The difference does exist with more cores, but I doubt that just hyper-threading would change much. An X99 i7 would make a difference for sure, but that is due to core count.

750W PSU is fine to handle two 970's, It should handle two 980Ti's without a problem leaving the rest of the machine to about 250w, which is plenty

Its diminishing return, The more cores you get, the less you get in return, And it starts near if not right after 4 cores.

But the only thing a non-x99 i7 adds in ht which does not do much if anything for gaming regardless of resolution. The clock speed bump can be compensated for with overclocking.

Ok. I changed the WD green drive because they are not very stable drives. 2. I upgraded you to X99 because the 6 core are way better for multi-tasking and when DX-12 supported games start coming out which should start happening in about a year you should get a nice performance boost due to DX-12 allowing game's to utilize as many CPU cores as you have.
