audacity is free and a very good beginner recording software. just enough tools to make good music without over complicating it. i play drums and guitar and ive used it to mix both and its very good.

You can't just put an Apple OS on anything. If you want to use Mac OS without buying a Mac you need to build a Hackingtosh, and as far as I know those can only be build as a desktop.

If you're talking recording, then there's Reaper.  It's really powerful, though I personally haven't dug too deeply into it.  http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

It's not free, but IIRC the trial doesn't actually expire, so use it at your own leisure. :P

If you're looking for something much simpler, then, yeah, Audacity.

OH, wait, so he's looking to do stuff purely electronically?  Not recording instruments?  From what I can tell GarageBand would be terrible for that.

My DAW of choice is Renoise.  http://www.renoise.com/  IMO it's really easy to pick up; you can just plunk down notes and samples right away.  The demo is fully functional, you just can't render to WAV.  And the full version is only $80, unlike something like Ableton Live that can go for $800.
