Hard drive failure

my computer broke after six months with a startup repair problem 5 months later it did it again. The first time I could fix it but the second time I could not so I had to reset everything. Then it wouldn't get past welcome screen so I had to fresh restart it again and 5 days after that it did it again and I had to fresh restart again. I was told it was most likely my hard drive so I bought a new one and it's coming in tommorow, but I am uncertain if it was only my hard drive just because I am always worried xD. Any thoughts of something else it could've been?

did you by chance mess with the windows files?

 

or hard shutdown often?

I never messed with the windows files but I hard shutdown about 80 percent of time and by that you mean using the button on the front of your case, correct?

why....by hard i mean holding the power button down till pc shuts off

I would definitely run a diagnostic utility on the drive and check it's health. I would recommend using the one provided by the manufacturer. Running chkdsk /r from the CMD might also show you some errors on the drive. 
You could also run a stress test and a memtest to check the rest of your parts. Running an antimalware software could also be a good idea.
