So lately I've been looking into building a home server, and right now I would like some advice from you guys. This home server is meant to back up my system, run a 24/7 teamspeak server, and stream DVD rips from my collection, and stream any videos I have stored on it. The big thing is that I don't know what operating system to get, and what kind of system will I need to run this server? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Server OS options: Linux, Windows, Amahi, FreeNAS.

I recommend Amahi or Linux. Amahi is super simple to use. Linux is the opposite unless you already know stuff about it.

Hardware goals:

2-4 cores at 2.0GHz or greater (preferably an Atom or Avoton CPU)

2-4GB of RAM (preferably 4GB) unless you are using FreeNAS, in which case, 8GB minimum.

However much storage you want. Depends on how many copies of your data you wish to keep.

For my pertinent links to guides, reviews, and anything similar, go here, and look under the spoiler labeled such. A brief history of Unix and it's relation to OS X by Builder.

Would I be able to run a teamspeak server on freeNAS, or am I limited to another OS if I want to do that?

You can run Teamspeak in a Jail (a virtual machine, basically) in FreeNAS.

Minecraft servers, there are plugins that autoinstall. I don't think there's a Teamspeak one, but there is a guide for them on FreeNAS' forums.
