Installing Windows 8.1 to USB Fail

Hello, I have a Windows 8/8.1 laptop. This weekend I will be building my PC and plan on installing Windows 8.1 through USB. I have installed the Windows 8.1 Setup on my USB. And when I tried to enter my product key to install Windows 8.1 into the USB a message saying "This product key cannot be used to install a retail version of windows 8.1". I'm stuck on what to do Help please

Have you used the product key before? If not, enter the key here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery Download the ISO and stick it on the drive and install, you shouldn't have any more trouble

can only use that key on the laptop

When I clicked the link it says its for Windows 7 recovery? Do I still put in my Windows 8.1 code? And no I havent used the code. (Bought it off g2play.net)

its probably an oem key

Even though it says windows 7 recovery Microsoft will /should/ give you the correct OS, and Some people have had non working keys from g2p, you should always buy it from a retailer or Reddit's key swap
