Hello,

I was searching in The Netherlands for a laptop for my ICT Manager on school. I found this Lenovo Z50-70 with I5 4210u, 8gb ram, 1tb SSHD, hd potato graphics, 5ghz, wifi -ac and dvd writer/reader

Minimum requerments

I5

500gb hdd

Windows 8,1

4 gb (second year 8gb)

Wifi ends -N

5 ghz wifi

Dvd writer/ reader.

My question is: is SSHD good solution for fast laptop? I would use it with C# and VM-x

No. Just get an SSD

The "SSHD" is mostly for marketing. It probably has some sort of flash cache (about 8GB of flash storage)

I always like to steer clear of SSHDs, since they're not as reliable as HDDs or SSDs

Totally disagree. SSHD can be a lot faster, and usually does not cost much more than a standard 500GB drive. I have used 2 different hybrid drives over the years in laptops, and have since moved them into my main rigs as just extra storage.

They are definitely not as good as a straight up SSD, but they become leaps and bounds faster than HDD's for certain tasks, like booting. The drive will have some flash (usually 8 or 16 GB) that it will automagically figure out what to store there. I remember when playing Skyrim on my old laptop 4 years ago how much of a drastic improvement I felt switching from a standard drive to the hybrid in load and save times.

In the end, YMMW, but given the choice and only slight cost difference, I would go with the SSHD.

When in doubt, re-format.

An SSHD in a mobile device definitely makes sense if you think you'll use more storage space than an SSD alone would provide. For a programming machine (working with lots of small files) there will be real-world benefits over a traditional mechanical HDD. However, it's also true to say that you won't see the same performance as you would have for a 'pure' SSD.

I did look for 512gb ssd laptop with school requerments and they are f*cking expensive. Is the differents high by sshd and ssd?

Yeah, the price difference between a pure SSD and an SSHD is quite large. With an SSHD there's only a small amount of flash in the drive (typically something like 8-16GB) which is used to cache the most frequently accessed files. With an SSD you're paying for a hell of a lot more of that flash, so the price goes up accordingly. SSD prices are still trending downwards though, so the future is bright (not that that helps you at the moment...). In a few years time we may see SSDs be price-competitive against mechanical hard drives, for capacities which most people would use.

But that means that for min requerment of 500gb good is for my school like running virtual machines?

SSHDs are a waste.

Though something like WD's dual drive which is both a decently sized SSD and HDD is actually pretty nice for a laptop.

Think of it this way.

A HDD is slow, but cheap and designed for bulk storage at this point.

An SSD is fast and is getting cheaper by the day and in bigger capacities, but are still a bit more expensive than I would really say is worth it if you're going to store a lot of stuff on it.

An SSHD bridges that gap, by being noticeably faster than an HDD (though not quite as fast as an SSD), is cheaper than an SSD at higher capacities, and are actually more reliable than some people let on.

Sorry, I don't understand this question. Are you asking if the 500GB minimum requirement from the first post is because the course is going to need that much storage space to run multiple virtual machines?

Sorry, I mean: my school ask more of 500 gb minimum and a ssd of 500gb are expensive. Does running vm ware on sshd well or same as hdd?

OK, I understand you now. Sorry for the confusion. Yeah, the SSD isn't a very economical choice, unfortunately. The SSHD option is the best one, in my opinion, for its balance of performance against price.

Don't knock it till you try it. They work fantastically on laptops if you need the capacity but cant fork out the $$ for a 512 gb ssd.

On the first boot it will be the same, but by the 3rd re-boot, it will have cached things and you WILL notice a large difference.

OBVIOUSLY, a pure SSD is better, but that isn't an option for the OP.

When in doubt, re-format.

SSHD's are great for laptops not as good when you already have an SSD, while the bulk of your programs/files are going to be at the hard drive speed, things like booting up and regularly used programs will be just as fast as an SSD and they are very reliable unlike what people say
