Laptop hard drive issues.

Go to solution Solved by JefferyD90,

So i should do a clean instal to prevent windows from generating corrupted files? I guess if it cant hurt the drive further than thats what i will do. If i find there to be no issues after the fresh install which diagnostics should i run to make sure there arent any issues with the hard drive (bad sectors is a thing ive heard a lot)?

Thanks guys

Yea, sometime the disk check errors aren't from a bad disk itself but rather from a bad filing system.

But if it makes it worse, or doesn't make it better, you're still (no matter what) going to have to get a new drive.

Window's built in Disk Check is MORE than sufficient to ensure proper operation.  And it isn't about Window's generating more errors, it's about the potential that it is just filing system based.

A friend of mine is having problems with his laptop and has asked me for help. Apparently the whole thing is pretty messed up and needs a new windows install however something has me worried. His laptop will every so often blue screen and then windows will go into an automatic disk check CHKDSK which finds errors and even starts deleting some files in an attempt to fix issues but then fails. This obviously needs fixing and i doubt a simple format will help.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Should i first do a windows format and then try a fix? I read chkdsk /r /f is the command to fix this, is this true?

If it is having disk check errors, doing a clean install wont hurt anything more than normal.  What you COULD do is do the install and see if it clears up a few issues.  If it doesn't (sorry to say) it will make it worse.  At that point you can just buy a new drive for $50'ish.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

chkdsk /f /r is that what Windows is doing, check disk. The installation is messed up, crashes, and leaves corrupted files behind, which then chkdsk cleans up. Simple.

Download HD Tune and perform sector scan on hard drive, if it is fine, Windows is taking a shit.

Well if all the sectors are good then Windows is taking a shit. Happened too many times to me to be funny. So i'm on GNU/Linux now.
