I'm in the process of dialing in a good overclock for my 4690k for the first time. I've been reading forum posts on safe OC temps, and most people are recommending to try to keep your cpu temps below 80c... I just past the 30 minute mark on Aida64 stress test and my average temps are sitting around 63c! My settings are (still adjusting, these aren't final numbers)

i5 4690k

Asrock z97 anniversary

2x4 ddr3 1600 @1.55v

Hyper 212 evo, two 140mm and one 200mm set to 50% speed in a Phanteks Enthoo Pro

Cpu: 4600mhz

Cache: 4000mhz

Vcore: override/manual mode, 1.2v

Vcore offset: auto

Cache voltage: override/manual, 1.15

Cache voltage offset: auto

Cpu input votage: fixed, 1.900v

RAM: 2x4 ddr3 1600 @1.550v

All other settings are at default or auto. So my question is... what's wrong lol. I do have decent airflow, yes, but all the 4.6 oc's I've seen reported mid-70's under stress and I have cores dipping down to 55c under full load. I've checked temps in Afterburner, Aida64, OpenHardwareMonitor, and RealTemp, so is this for real or should I be suspect of a faulty temp sensor? I should also mention that temps during Aida64 hovered in the low 60s when I ran a 4.0 and 4.2 overclock as well.

Some chips have decent thermals, just like some have decent silicon. It's just luck of the draw.

Your core voltage is low, I've seen people take it a lot higher, so that will come into play. Whether you have your fans running at 100% or not will factor in. Some people like to keep them near silent no matter how much things get hot. I doubt you have a dodgy temp sensor.

Have you tried running intel burn test? I find it gives your cpu a better stressing than Aida64.

I don't think it's much to worry about

I ran IBT max stress/10 passes with my 4.0 clock on automatic voltage and it passed fine, I'll try again tomorrow with this setup, thanks

You're using very little voltage to achieve that OC, most people who manage to get a 4.6GHz OC probably use close to 1.3V, which is way more heat to deal with. It seems like you have an excellent chip, that's what's happening.

Wow, you mean I actually got lucky on something? Lol thanks guys

Yup, definitely. To get a stable 4.4GHz I need 1.21V on my i5 4670k, 1.2V for 4.6GHz is pretty damn nice.

I get 4.7GHz @ 1.23v and my temps reach 80c real fast with that Prime95. Normal load like Cinebench or rendering videos, it stays nice and cool at 60c. Then again, I delidded my CPU for 10c drop in temps.

It happens -- Silicon lottery mang!

My i5-4690K can, too, do 4.6 GHz with 1.20V, but if I recall, runs into the mid 70*C when doing AIDA64 stability test.

Then again, my CPU cooler is not the CM Hyper 212 EVO...it's a Corsair A50 (Yes, Corsair air cooler; performs at the Hyper 212 Plus level).

UPDATE: Thanks for the suggestion, IntelBurnTest seems to be pushing things hotter then Aida64. Haven't ran prime yet, I probably will once I get things locked in. I've been playing around a bit, pushed the clock to 4.7 at 1.2v, got to the desktop then BSOD. Tried 4.7 at 1.25v, ran IBT for maybe 3 minutes, temps hit 80-85 then BSOD. I'm back down to 4.5@1.2v, 9 of 15 passes on IBT and we're holding steady at 75-80c. Ambient is 21c, so maybe it was cooler last night? Going to try 4.6@1.2v on IBT next
