I have just received one of my coloured PET sleeving and wanted to test out the method but I don't have a lighter and do not have access to one, I was wondering if a heat gun would be accurate enough or even if I could test with a hair dryer to get the technique down so I don't mess up my actual cables in my build.

Well what method are you going to go with? Using heatshrink? Also you have access to a heatgun but not a lighter, what the hell?

I want to use heatshrink but do not want it to be visible, I meant can I use a hair dryer in the meanwhile or should I just buy a heatgun

Why not just buy a lighter? If you use heatshrink it's going to be visible. Heatshrinkless sleeving is a little more complicated, but it's not as hard to get it to look good and consistent as it is with heatshrink (you will still need heatshrink for the process). A hairdryer is not good enough.

Just find a few pennies laying around the house and get one from the corner store

I would suggest to go get a lighter it comes in handy but you can do it with a heat gun and heatshrink for the heatshrinkless method, if you haven't already seen this it 's a good guide to PET sleeving:
