GPU VRM - need some clarification

don_svetlio

Okay, so I've already asked around a bit but I stumbled across an XFX R9 280 (same as mine) review over on kitguru where they listed power consumption during furmark to be about 250W for the GPU. Now, mine is not XFX but it's still the same chip and it has the same connectors - PCIe (75W) + 6-pin (75W) + 8-pin (150W) = 300W total, meaning that it wouldn't be possible to overload the VRMs using furmark. I've been stressing out a bit since the place where I bought my PSU used that to stress the GPU and I've been worried if anything bad might have happened such as damage to the VRMs. I don't recall it crashing or rebooting so no overheating/overload has happened AFAIK. I've also not had issues but if my logic is correct then it's not likely to have caused anything right? I do know mine has a 12-phase power delivery system resulting in more clean and efficient power but not sure how dumb letting them do that was really. I also have the front 2 intake fans as exhaust and 1 in the back as intake and the VRMs usually sit around 72*C max in valley with the core at 70*C max and fan speed @ 37%. Here's a GPU-Z screenshot for anyone interested. (VDDC voltage is likely a bug or a random spike, when I hover over it, it displays around 1.030V - 1.070V)

Am I right that it's all fine? This is the last time I post about this, I promise :/

It seems like you should be perfectly fine, those temps are well within spec too. Furmark has a bad reputation and for a good reason, but if you haven't noticed any degraded performance / random crashes you should be perfectly fine. Also by the math that you did you should be fine.

Thanks all, I just needed some words of encouragement. I would suppose the 3-4*c increase in VRM temp can be attributed to the reverse airflow? (CPU cooler wouldn't fit the correct way cause of RAM)

Well, I changed fan orientation for the front 2 but nothing changed. I guess Furmark did do a number on the VRMs ._.
