how to select the right RAM

hey there, I'm picking out computer parts and I'm a bit of a scrub when it comes to pairing a motherboard with ram and am wondering how do i know if the ram stick will fit in the motherboard because in looking at photos of different ram sticks and the pin divider split is located in different places on some models and don't know how to see if the ram will fit in the motherboard. so my question is what should i be looking for when selecting ram and a motherboard, like is there something in the specs that explain what type of ram fits into this motherboard. Thanks in advance.

When looking at a motherboard specifications it will say the RAM type ie DDR3,DRR4,DRR3L. You buy RAM based on what is compatible with the Motherboard, most motherboards use DDR3 but high end X99s and new Z170s use DDR4, but some low end Z170s aren't DDR4 and use DRR3L.
