First PC Build; Critique?

With the extra student loan money this semester, I've decided to ascend.  I have a friend majoring in computer science helping me out, and he recommended posting it here.

Budget: $1000 (including peripherals).

Goals: Longevity, using Adobe Photoshop, gaming every once in a while. These are hobbies, not my career choice.
Planned upgrades: More RAM, and a better GPU. Maybe an HDD.

RAM - 1x8GB DDR3-1600 (Crucial Ballistix Sport)

SSD -  Sandisk 256GB

PSU - Thermaltake SMART 750W

The reason I haven't included an HDD is because I've lived comfortably off of ChromeOS. I don't need that much space.

What do you guys think?

You get no integrated GPU, but otherwise it's basically a cheaper i7.

What do you recommend for a PSU? Reddit's /r/pcmasterrace builds has an EVGA 850W.

in terms of the ssd at the 85 dollar price point, i would get an 850 evo from samsung instead

the 290 is fine, but it gets very hot when under load. if you can squeeze a 390 in instead, that would be better as i've heard they have much better cooling

i don't know anything about your psu. i go for evga gs or g2 psu's or seasonic ones

your monitor is a bit cheap for gaming. ideally, you want a 1ms and 144 hertz monitor for playing games. if you can save up more and buy one of these at a later date, i would do that

#1 The ssd is his only drive, there's no reason not to spend the extra 20 bucks and get double the space.

#2, I agree he might want to spend a bit more on it. But 1ms at 144hz makes absolutely no sense for him. He said going to be doing photoshop in addition to gaming, which means a tn panel wouldn't work. and the difference between 1ms and 5ms is completely negligible, that's 4 thousands of one second, and ghosting shouldn't be a problem under 10ms. and a 290 isn't going to be pushing 144hz on any decent quality in most modern games.
