[Urgent!] Can I install Windows 10 (via ISO) on to my laptop WITHOUT losing any data?

well the only way to do the upgrade which will preserver your files is to start the setup within your old windows. since that doesnt boot - no you will have to format the HDD for that.

a way would be to boot the win8 disk, repair the installed system and then upgrade from within that.

Its like 1AM here, but I'm damn near having a heart attack.

After trying to install Win10 on my Win 8.1 laptop, I kept getting the error "Windows cannot install on a USB drive" or something weird like that. After trying to diagnose the issue, I decided reboot my laptop, and now its giving me a boot error (I'm downstairs now so I can't give you the exact error message". I went online and read stuff like "reinstall Win 8.1" and all, which I can simply not do! I have a lot of important files on my laptop.

So, I'm thinking about creating an ISO for Win10 and trying to install it straight up instead of repairing/reinstalling Win 8.1. The question is, can I install Win 10 on my laptop from a bootable ISO and not have to delete everything?!

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: The error was: Boot configuration data file is missing some required info.

Thanks brother, I guess I'll first repair the old OS and continue on from there!

Okay one more (noob) question: Should I download a Win8.1 ISO just make a repair disk?
