I have a AMD HD 6850 inside my Dell computer case. On 0 activity the temperature runs around 66 degrees celsius while at load it touches 80.

The Dell case has ONE exhaust fan in the back and vents on the side panel and in the front for air intake.

SHOULD I - open the side panel and let air flow naturally OR buy a desk fan and point it to the side panel vents?

NOTE: I am planning or purchasing an R9 390X or a R9 Nano with plans to build a new is system in the future.

At the moment, those temps are actually great! When you upgrade the card you might want to see about getting more airflow, or a new case. When you change the card just try it out, if temps are in a comfortable range then i'd leave it, but if it starts getting toasty in there then you might need to work on the airflow.

I agree that 80*C under load with bad airflow is normal but 66 on idle? That doesn't sound right.

Could be related to the cooler, I am in cold room so my idle temps of 30c probably don't apply. It is likely to do with the bad design of Dell cases, and the cooler on the card. I ran 6970s, they idled at around 60. There are quite a few factors,

Maybe you need to reapply the thermal paste on the gpu. Possibly with an aftermarket one.

My old MSI 6850 ran at 35*C idle and 62*C under load.

It likely had an aftermarket cooler on it aswell, no stock cooler ran that well, I don't mean to shut you down every turn but not everything is designed perfect.

Oh, it wasn't the blower cooler, no. It was a single fan.

I honestly like Blower coolers more. I like how they look and that the case stays cool.
