Windows 10 upgrade question

Can I disconnect my hard drive and upgrade to windows 10 then wipe and reinstall it on my ssd then reconnect my hard drive? Or will there be compatibility issues. My hard drive contains all files that aren't system related, like steam games, etc. Furthermore can I move programs and programm files to my hard drive, like steam? Some of my programs are installed onto the ssd.
