I know AMD have their chart on compatibility http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Crossfire-Chart.aspx

BUT...

Question: What if I buy a 290x today for like £200

Yes they have been that cheap http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/xfx-radeon-r9-290x-dd-edition-graphics-card-4gb-gddr5-199-38-amazon-2235220

What if I wait a year or 18 months for a 390 or 380 to come down in price to say below £150

Can I only use a 390x with a 290x and so on? Or can I use a 290x with a 380 or a 390???

Does it matter if it's a Hawaii Pro (290) or a Hawaii XT (R9 290X) and similar???

R9 290, 290x, 390, 390x can be used together,

R9 285, 380 can be used together

Where are you getting your info dude? I can't find anything definitive on the newer 300 series compatibility

AMD is more lenient on CF than what nVidia is with SLI. If the GPU core is the same. 285/380 is tonga, 290/290X/390/390X are Hawaii.

Regardless a driver update already allowed the R9 3XX and R9 2XX cards to be used together, you could already crossfire 295x2, 290X, and 290 together any way you wanted (max 4 GPUs though). http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/you-can-pair-an-r9-300-series-gpu-with-an-r9-200-in-crossfire.214259/

There are a few caveats. Multi-GPU configurations are basically down to the slower card. If they have a different memory count, the lower memory count applies. DirectX 12 is supposedly going to change this, but as long as developers would have to explicitly assign different tasks for different GPUs instead of the API / engine handling the task management automatically, I wouldn't hold my flag up high.

Cheers man, so any 3xx card will crossfire with any 2xx card with the 15.7 driver update? Is that right?

That card is £300, follow through on the links.

I'm selling a PowerColour R9 290x PCS+ for £200 though in what is a pretty much unused condition. PM me if interested :)

I didn't mean £200 right now dude sorry, I did say they HAVE been that cheap as my link takes you to HUKD it clearly states £199.38, no offence dude but if I CAN get a BRAND NEW 290x for £200 I will wait rather then get a USED one even if its good condition cheers anyway.

No, he means that you can crossfire between the 290 series and 390 series, not all 200's and 300's.

That first link that Zulkkis posted covers exactly what can be combined.

Sorry! Maybe I'm being stupid (or blind) but I don't see any info on that link (the same one I posted in the OP BTW) for what will crossfire with 300 series GPUs it only lists 200 series ones and older

Ya I just noticed that. Hopefully they will update it soon.

T'was just an offer. Though in truth I doubt you'll soon find a 290x for that price; after the 970's RAM "issue" was exposed prices gradually have increased. Remember, the 390x chip is the same, but it goes for £350 instead of £200 now.
