SPDIF Barely Works

A few weeks ago, I got an SPDIF cable and it worked perfectly.  It started cutting out every so often, and has gradually gotten worse.  Now, it barely works, and the sound could be working for only 1 second at a time while it is silent for 10-15.  I tried changing out the cable, didn't help.  Any ideas?

Not sure if this helps, but the SPDIF is hooked directly up to my computer and plugs into a receiver, which goes to my speakers.
