Single card. No issues with scaling or compatibility, less power draw, less heat.

EDIT: Although, some situations require two or more cards, as single cards aren't powerful enough to drive 4K at good settings and FPS.

What is the ideal solution for gamers?  Having two cards running together or a single card solution?

I'm leaning towards a single card solution because its cheaper, requires less wattage, current gen the VRAM doesnt stack yet so opinions may change.

single card is always better then dual cards.

The current line up seems alright to drive 4k provided you don't upscale everything to ultra high

Yeah I guess nvidia also changed from 700 series onwards without dual cards? Never seen a titan z config in person ever.

Medium settings, not always getting 60FPS is not what I would consider running it well. You can run it with one card, but it's not a great experience.

Its in this case where (295x2) would be ideal I guess over a single card.

Well, the 295x2 is a single card, it just has two GPUs on it. It doesn't have the same issues as two separate cards do, or at least not as much, but it does have issues with heat, power and basically what you can fit on a single PCB.

I wouldn't ever go with a dual GPU card, mainly because there's less PCB allocated to each GPU, resulting in less well built power delivery, cooling and general features. They also run bloody hot most of the time.

Even on top of the AIO cooler it still isnt worth the risk.

Single GPU over dual GPU.

The R9 295X2 is still a dual config. On that PCB there are 2 separate GPUs that are being crossfired.

As a dual solution for 4k it holds up well, but given the option, I would opt for the 980 ti purely for the cost savings over a titan x.
