My AMD FX 6300 was at 76 degrees C and I am using a stock cooler. I haven't installed windows or anything and in the BIOS the temperature was at 76 degrees. I took my heatsink off the CPU once and did not replace the thermal paste, it this the cause and should I buy an after market cooler?

Also people were saying that my motherboard was build for older CPU''s and this may be why it is hot. I am using an asrock 980DE3/U3S3 Motherboard

If you took the heatsink off and didn't change the thermal paste, that is your issue. Buy a tube of Arctic Silver 5, take off your heatsink, clean both the top of the CPU and heatsink with isotropy alcohol, closer to 100% the better, and then put some new paste on there. Should fix your issue :)

Wouldn't recommend Arctic Sliver. Better to go for something that performs the same, but isn't conductive so it doesn't matter if you mess up. Something like MX-4 (think it's cheaper, too)

Not a bad idea actually. For a beginner a non conductive TIM is a good idea. Good call! I am just so used to saying "just get some AS5" as me and my buddies all use it... MX-4 is just as good.

I giggled. And I'm at work... lol

haha lol. I am at work too, thus my bad. isopropyl*

To be honest, there's like 5C difference between toothpaste and the 'best' TIM. Lots of people recommend AS5, as it used to be the best performing, but it's somewhere in the middle and conductive, so I don't recommend it. Even experienced builders can make stupid mistakes and get TIM everywhere xD

I don't think its in the middle, its definitely a top tier TIM, but there is better these days no doubt, but like you said its all within a few C.

Pretty much slap bang in the middle, or worse. It used to be very good, but for the past couple of years, others have overtaken it, including MX-2 and MX-4

Impressed with the Coolaboratory stuff though, I may have to try it.
