Hi there!

I have a bit silly question about software Raid 0 (and Raid in general): if I have a drives that has been used in Raid 0 and I'm moving them into another PC or just reinstalling the OS (in case of software RAID) - I'm gonna have to format the drives again while initializing the RAID? I hope not..

And if I have software Raid 0 on Windows and I'm also using Linux (OS's are on the separate drive) can I just "tell" the computer that those drives are in Raid 0 mode and it's going to work?

Thank you!

P.S. without trolling, plz )

Software based RAID in my experience is specific to the RAID software, on that distribution.

i.e. if I made a RAID using mdadm on Ubuntu 14.04 x64, and installed the same software stack on the new PC, then it will work.

Otherwise, nope.

My solution would to be have a PC as a NAS to do your RAID, then have more volatile storage for your clients i.e. SSDs.

So you're saying that it is important to use the same software for creating RAID on both operating systems?

Sorry for asking again, english is not my mother tongue.  ;)

Yeah, I'd imagine it would need to be the same software in both instances. Someone more experienced may want to weigh in though...
