CPU upgrade.. thoughts?

Go to solution Solved by Jlryan,

Lol yes bottlenecks still exist.

Wait for skylake if you've got the upgrade itch, it's just around the corner! And no there won't be any bottleneck issues between Skylake and the 900 series.

Most of LGA 1155 prices have increased whenever I look, new that is. Your best bet is to buy an LGA 1155 CPU used on a trusted website. I've seen 3770k's new for a lot (CAD that is.) If you find them expensive, your best bet would be upgrading to LGA 1150. 4690k and MSI Z97 motherboard (Unless you need the 4790k)

Why do you need to upgrade? I would have thought the 3550 would be a good CPU for a few years unless you're heavily editing video or running multiple GPU's.

My suggestion is to wait for the impending Skylake release which is expected to be sometime next month. The upgrade cost won't be much higher than upgrading to Haswell or Broadwell right now and you'll get ~30-40% better performance.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

You would see a much better performance increase from a GPU upgrade rather than CPU. Going from a 3550 to a 3770k would probably give you <10% if that even for gaming. Not worth the prices tbh.
