SLI worth it?

Go to solution Solved by 1Scotty1,

BUT dont get me wrong, I love gaming and the pc will be used for demanding games (GTA, Far Cry, Battlefront hopefully, etc...)

I had to ask, because many people get the 4790K and in gaming it yields no difference from the 4690K :) OK, since you stated that you don't overclock and don't plan to, get the H97 motherboard and the locked 4790 :) you will see a big benefit over that FX CPU you have :)

thats one hell of a psu for what you have going on, your cpu will bottleneck hardcore in sli though, and you're better off just getting a 380/390 something similar

Im not too well versed as far as CPUs go. The 9590 will bottleneck? I know it doesnt compare to something like an i7 4790, but i thought it'd handle SLI with no problems

the 9590 is just an over clocked 8350, that as is doesnt fair well with newer single gpus, if you add two into the mix you'll see a huge dip in performance from the cards compared to benchmarks due to the cpu just not being that good. I'm not trying to say intel is better or anything, but the fx series is OLD and its time has passed, you'd be best going to an intel i5 or waiting for zen before you consider going sli. Plus, you'd get better performance from selling the card and buying a newer one, which in return will give you the performance you want with less of a bottleneck

I'd love to get an i5 or i7 eventually, but that means id have to get a new mobo too right? i havent done much research on it at all. i have an ASRock 990fx extreme9...

Yes, you would have to get a new mobo as well, and like it was stated, newer GPUs will be bottlenecked by that CPU you have, so I suggest upgrade that now to at least an i5-4460, you will see a big increase in performance and after that get a better GPU :)

would something like the ASUS Sabertooth Z97 mark 2 make sense/ be the best option if i wanted to get to a 4790? I have just begun a little research on intel lol

sorry if this is starting to stray from the original forum topic haha. Im genuinely interested here.

I do not have the money to even think about getting a new cpu and mobo (and be satisfied). I think i may just have to wait and save up for that possibility. (right after i stabilize my cpu temps lol)

Are you thinking about a regular 4790 or a 4790K? because the K is for overclocking, hence get the Z97 motherboard, if just a regular 4790, then the H97 series is enough for your needs :)

Does the difference between performance in respect to price seem worth it to get the 4790k over the regular? Just out of curiosity, and you seem very knowledgeable! (From what i see on amazon at least, there's like a $30ish difference).

It all depends on one thing - do you want to overclock? If yes, get the Z97 motherboard + 4790K :) If not, get the H97 and the 4790 :)

BUT... I have to ask - is this purely for gaming? If yes, lower it to the i5-4690, there is little to no difference in gaming with the 4690 vs. 4790

I generally like to stay away from overclocking as I am a novice in these matters, meaning I'm not even sure how to do that lol. A couple of my friends have dedicated buttons on their cases that allow them to do that, i do not and havent looked into it haha.

It is not purely for gaming. I work in Photoshop and several 3D modeling programs as well as static image rendering (architecture student), so i think thats why i may have been suggested the CPU that i have (cheaper 8 core option, if im right about that?).

Thank you so much! Im not quite in the position to switch out those parts just yet, but when i do i may have to post on here for more details.
