Factory Reset gone Wrong

Go to solution Solved by CH-Nils,

OEM key worked just fine no need to install anything...

Graphics drivers got installed with amd's autodetect software (Praise Gaben)

Looks like it's actually gonna be fine...

EDIT: Thank you all for your help... Again Linustechtipsforum peoplez are AWESOME

Hello people!

I was trying to restore my mom's old laptop (HP pavillion 15.4 inch) with win 7 home premium 64 bit.

Now in the middle of the reset (69%) i got an error message saying that windows could not be reset using the factory image...

Great...

Now: where can i find a new ISO in order to create a boot USB drive?
Microsoft won't give isos on the preinstalled windows Laptops...

Theoretically if i get a win7 iso it will install with the win7 code on the back sticker right?

Thanks alot!

You can get the ISO for W7 HP here:

-> http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-7-home-premium-free-download-iso-32-bit-64-bit/

You might need to activate the OEM key on the notebook via telephone.

You won't need to activate via telephone, it should work first time.

No probably not because you are reinstalling win 7 using the ISO you might have to get Microsoft's Call Support to walk you through everything and give you the new code to activate it. You could try the one on the back but I don't think it will work.

most of the time you can get a "factory reset" recovery disk for laptops, it doesn't cost much. I'd look for it.

if you install a fresh windows 7, chances are you won't be able to find all the right drivers and things won't work properly.

Hardware: 4790k @ 4.6 GHz w/ H100i - MSI GTX 970 - Define R5 - MSI Z97 PC Mate - 840 EVO - G.Skill 2x4 GB

Peripherals: G402 - ATH-AD700x - Asus VG248QE 144 hz

i found running stock with non manufacturer tied drivers run better. My stock 10 slaughtered the built in 7 partially due to lack Toshiba installed muck.

yea, it always depends on the company that manufactured the laptop and the parts they used.. I got away with fresh windows 7 install on my cheap laptop but I couldn't even get the GPU to work properly if I didn't do a proper factory reset with my mother's HP laptop.

My grandmother hp I replaced go gpu drivers with stock and they worked great. It weird I guess when it doesn't work. Also did you try installing the stock mobile driver manually from gpu vendor?

yea, I tried from hp's site, didn't work. I then tried the driver from nvidia's site, and it didn't work either. I spent hours messing with it, and finally gave up and just went with the junk filled factory default install.

whatever driver I used, the GPU would just display broken colors, lines and artifacts all over the place.

anyway, point is op should be mindful of fresh windows install on laptops, proper drivers aren't always provided with some manufacturers

aye yes sir xD I am not computer illiterate, I knew exactly what GPU was inside my mother's laptop, it just wasn't working, it was some weird proprietary version of that GPU...

I was making sure...that is an awful gpu setup and I thought implementations of stock hardware that bad were dead...

Can we just agree that HP sucks? had 3 HP laptops in 4 years... NEVER AGAIN!!!

From now on the only brand i trust is ASUS & Lenovo (for laptops)

ok thanks for the link. What do you mean activate the OEM key via telephone?

The OEM key is the one on the sticker on the back no?

Like already mentioned, yes on the sticker is your Windows key.

With OEM keys like this, i mostly had problems to activate a fresh install via internet. It might work, but i had trouble with OEM keys in the past.

If you also have the problem, that your windows won't activate via internet, you have to activate it via telephone.

Its more or less a atomated process, you call a number from Micosoft, then have to enter a bunch of numbers and you should get a bunch on numers back, that you have to type in.
