Im using:

ASUS Maximus VI Hero

16mb of corsair vengeance ram at 1600mhz

So im trying to configure sli with my two 980's and the option will not show up on the nvidia control pannel. I believe i have enabeled sli in the bios and ive even tried to update the bios to see if that was the issue and it wasnt my bios software is up to date. Ive tested the cards seperately, and in two seperate pcie slots. when i plug one of the cards into the second pcie slot its works but the resolution is downscaled to something rediculously low and when i right click my desktop accessing the nvidia control pannel isn't an option. the card works perfectly fine in the first slot. the other card does the same thing when its plugged into the second slot and also works in the first slot. it isnt the sli bridge (which came with my motherboard) to be sure of this ive ordered a nvidia bridge which will come in 2 days. the board is sli enabeled so it isnt that. My computer does not recognize one of the cards when they're both plugged in. im thinking its the second pcie express slot. im kind of fed up with troubleshooting for now so..yeah. thanks for any imput.

Make sure each slot is receiving x8 bandwith. SLI won't work if the top slot is using all 16 lanes. This can be changed in the UEFI.

This is not the case. with the whole resolution down scale i thought that it wasnt recognizing the card and using the onboard video, but when they are both in i get this in the bios. Still no idea what's wrong.

I see

Have you tried the very bottom slot? It is 2.0 x16.

You may find it tedious, but it can lead you closer to the solving the issue (all signs point to the second x16 slot).

I agree. it's probably the second slot. ill try moving the psu. There's no way to tell if the slot is broken without troubleshooting it right?

It can be defective without any visible indication.

My latest troubleshooting adventure involved using a spare power supply which sat atop my case with the cables draped over the side. Sometimes it's not pretty, but if it leads you to solving the issue (it did) then it's completely worth it.

I meant like software or something. I cant test any of my cards in the third slot because there aren't enough pcie slots in the back of my case. (450D). only saw that little hiccup after about 10 minutes of putzing around with my psu. oops. thanks for the help btw. im 99% convinced its the pcie slot that's the problem. the cards are brand new and the motherboard was purchased summer of 2014. i think it might also be worth mentioning that the motherboard did not come in an anti-static bag. i was going to send it back but i tried to see if it worked for fun and it did so i never thought twice. ill rock one card for now. my case and mobo are about due for an upgrade anyways, and its in my budget so no worries.
