So I've used furmark to stress GPU several times. Almost all were for about a minute but at the shop where I bought my new PSU they used it for about an hour on an open case and before I had used it for 15 mins or so to test the GPU itself.

What are the odds I damaged something? I've never gotten temp readings above 75*C on either the die or the VRMs.
Not sure about the shop but since the case was open probably not too high either. Asking since I've had 2 instances where GPU-Z's opening caused a freeze/lock-up. 1 was before taking it to the shop and 1 was after.

Temps while gaming never go above 70*C and I've not had actual games crash on me. I've played Shogun 2 for about 5 or so hour sittings last few days and not too much load has been put on it recently. Before that I ran Witcher 3 for 4 or 5 hours at a time.

if you can play games without crashes/artifacts nothings damaged

I read something along the line of mosfets' efficiency going down from 99% to 80% which in turn causes VRMs to heat up more and so on.

I use furmark sometimes if i need to get a quick load for core clocks. Its fine as long as you're not using it for like 5 hours or something dumb.

Well, I do notice that the VRMs now run 1-2*C higher but that might also be caused by making the 1 exhaust intake and 2 intake into exhaust (case fans) as well as trying it in different games. Before everything maxed out at 68C on die and 65C on VRM1 (VRM2 never even heats up). Now, with Shogun 2 I get 63C on both.

That being said, idle temps are same, if not better, than before with die at 32 and vrm at 29.

So I shouldn't worry if others are also having this issue with GPU-Z and it's likely me stressing out over nothing?

EDIT: Occasionally in Shogun 2 while it says "waiting for players" until my friend finishes loading, a firework like flash will appear somewhere in the top of the screen. Is that GPU-related (considered artifacting) or is it the game's bugs? Sometimes shadows also get wonky on walls.

what thing

A sun-like flicker can be seen while waiting for my mate to load. It disappears after we start the battle usually. Figured it's probably the game's lighting spazing out as it only sometimes appears.

I've never played the game so i wouldn't know tbh. If nothing similar shows up in any other games it probably just that games problem.

If nothing else I seem to have discovered the source of the GPU's usage spikes. Apparently it's connected to Facebook somehow since when I open it, temps go up to 40-ish. Close it and everything is fine.

How long did he run it for?

All of 10 minutes before it bricked my card.  Don't use Furmark, use Unigine Heaven/Valley or an in-game built in benchmark.  Furmark is just so beyond anything realistic that you would put on the GPU, its just something to avoid.

When you are gaming, changes are going on in the game, your GPU is basically using "adaptive mode" similar to your CPU to ramp up and down as the game calls for it. Depending on the action, or lack thereof that is going on in game, the GPU adapts to that scenario. It isn't going to use excessive amounts of power on a loading screen, or a cut scene, or something non-demanding. When something demanding does happen, then the GPU will ramp up to meet that demand.

Think of a Nascar Race, imagine the car as your GPU. When you are racing, your car is always adapting to the situation around you. You speed up, you slow down, you turn, you pit stop, things are going on that your car has to adapt to similar to your GPU when you game.

Now, what Furmark does is not like a game, or a Nascar race. Furmark is like a drag race. A pedal to the metal, push the car/GPU as hard as it can possibly go in a straight line, no turning, no stopping, just full on, all out go, go, GO! In a realistic scenario of GPU use, you would never, ever encounter this type of load. It is entirely unrealistic. I understand why reviewers use it, to get a worst case scenario idea, but it is so far outside the real of realism, that it should not be used. If your cooling cannot keep up with this excessive heat and load applied to the GPU, or there was a bad solder job done at the factory, or any number of things related to power delivery, that is when Furmark has the potential to break or degrade your GPU.

For most people, Furmark doesn't do anything to their GPU. But for a small percentage of people, Furmark has broken their card, including myself. A quick google and you will see that this is an issue. Not a big one, but large enough that it needs to be talked about.

"I genuinely dislike the promulgation of false information, especially to people who are asking for help selecting new parts."

I see. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this post. I guess I got lucky that mine didn't break. I've since uninstalled furmark and will likely never re-install that thing. Thank god for Asus' overkill heatsink that barely fits in my case then :D
