Reusing old windows 7 copy?

I am building a new PC soon, and my plan was to reuse an old OS. It is from an HP computer from 2009 that died. What should I do to try to make it work? I don't really care about any of the files. I don't know what the windows key was, so I don't really know what to do. My plan is for if it doesn't work, to use the windows 10 insider program, and if that doesn't work for some reason, I can buy a copy of windows 8. I really don't want to need to buy a new copy, so what should I do for it?
