Low SSD speeds on 850 EVO and v300

Go to solution Solved by Palorim12,

So that's it? I can't have full speeds of my SSD cause of my motherboard. Can anything be done on this?

Plug the SSD into the Intel 6GB/s port. Check your motherboard manual where they are located.

Hello,

As the title states .. I'm getting way below the specified speeds on my SSDs on Kingston v300 120GB SSD and Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD (2x of these).

As for the v300, I can see in other threads that since it's full and my boot drive, well not full but like 77 out of 111GB is full so the speeds won't be as good but still getting like 177.9 MB/s read and 88 MB/s write is not really acceptable or is it? and for 850 EVO 500GB brand new ones, just put them in and finished setting them up and getting only 401-405 MB/s on read and ~395 MB/s on write. Can any of you experts take a look at results below and suggest and let me know why is that? I'm using SATA 6GB/s connectors and powering them with Maximus VI Formula and AX1200i. I've benchmarked using CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD as well for you guys but if you want me to do anything else then please let me know.

As you can see the speeds on AS SSD Benchmark are even slower than on CrystalDiskMark Benchmark; So any help on this will be highly appreciated.

P.S. Geralt is not happy about these speeds either.

Fucking Kingston, eh?! Can't believe that, I just saw another thread on LTT about the same model that the speeds will be slower if the data is on them and I've been using this SSD for about a year now but frankly I have no idea why I never bothered to do a benchmark on the speed up until couple weeks ago when I found out that there are SATA 3GB/s and 6GB/s so I had to make sure I'm using the right connections (which I was with 6GB/s connection in my 800D case) but then I just unboxed and setup my 850 EVO and getting slower speeds on these too so that sucks, thus I made a thread asking for help.

However, I've had this for about a year now and since I got it from Pakistan it was probably from some old stock so is there any way I can check which variant of SSD I have? Would love any help on this so I will know if I need to give up on this with these speeds or tinker around if it's an older NAND chipset.

Those speeds are normal for a V300, which is why you shouldn't buy them... but yes you are getting slightly lower speeds on those 850 EVO then you should be

Exactly. So you see my worry, it's like 150 MB/s slower which is a huge number and I wouldn't say "slightly' lower lol. Any help on this, mate?

I don't believe it's the SSDs but maybe some of the settings in my PC that I have optimize and all? I've no idea about this and would love any help on this.

Checking what firmware ver is on the drive is a start.  It mentions the firmware version in the article Goodman2265 linked.

Ah, yeah. Sadly my firmware says 521A which is the bad one so that means I can kiss goodbye and give up on this SSD and just let it run as long as it runs and never deal with Kingston again, right? Since ... nothing can be done here.

However I can move past that but my Samsung 850 EVOs since they're brand new and only few hours old and yet still cannot perform at full speeds. I just did another test with Alpha version of CrystalDiskMark and it improved a bit in one test out of four but nothing significantly as it should have since speeds are still approx 150 MB/s slower. Follow is the screenshot if that test for your reference:

Just to be sure, I updated all the drivers from ASUS" website to the latest ones and made sure BIOS is also up to date which it was and AHCI is also activated and nothing else I can think of atm that can be causing the issue.

Any help on this will really really be appreciated, guys.

If the motherboard you are using is the one in your signature, Asus Maximus VI Formula, you are probably using the ASMEDIA 6/GB ports and not the Intel. The ASMEDIA ports never give full SATA III 6GB/s speed.

@Palorim12 - Thanks a bunch man, finally sorted it all out and connected all the hard drives to ASMedia first and then the leftovers to Intel controller while making sure every SSD in my system is connected to Intel controller.
