After sorting out problems with a faulty CPU and buying a new motherboard in the process, I now have come across another problem; I can't seem to figure out whether this is the GPU or the PSU, though.

GPU - MSI R7 260X 2GB

PSU - BeQuiet! 630W PurePower L8

New Motherboard - MSI A88X-G45 Gaming

Old Motherboard - ASRock FM2A55M-DGS

When using the set up for just web browsing, video watching, editing documents, running basic programs like Evernote or Thunderbird, all is well. Programs take a little longer to load up, but it's nothing too strange. As soon as I jump in a game, the game just runs extremely poorly - no playable framerates. There isn't hitching, or artifacting (although there was occasionally in one game before the whole situation started), it just plain doesn't run at close to the performance it used to. I used to be able to play games like Tomb Raider at 1080p and get a solid 60FPS. Now I can barely get 45FPS~ on 720p, and this is the same card. Furmark just completely crashes after about a minute, even on very low resolutions.

Could this be that the GPU is on it's way out, or that the motherboard is leaving less overhead than the old one, or that the PSU is on it's way out?

Did you check if your GPU is chocked with dust?

From just appearince within the case, it looks perfectly clean. There's no noticable dust around the fan or the heatsink of the GPU.

arnt apu's supposed to be unreliable or just plane shiity with gpu's?

Maybe, but it worked pretty darn well until the APU (of the same model) I replaced became faulty.

it could be driver,  or you might have zap your card during the upgrade.

If it's driver, it'll probably be sorted once I fresh install windows. If not, that fresh install will tell.  The problem is finding out specifically what it is, which becomes troublesome - so many tests are just inconclusive and don't point to anything.

That is the beauty of DIY, it makes you gears spin.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fresh install did nothing. Gonna try using the APU alone and look for any difference.
