I just bought an r9 390 graphics card. The problem is that my monitor only has one VGA port. My gpu has 4 hdmi ports and a DVI-d port. I bought an adapter that converts VGA to DVI-d. When I hooked everything up all I got was a black screen. What should I do? Help!

That thread title isn't very explanatory of your problem.

How does the adapter look like? Can you post a picture?

Im pretty sure the r9 390 doesnt support analog. Time to upgrade

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

If your monitor only has a single VGA port I would suggest upgrading your monitor but if this is not possible, try using all the different ports on your gpu and test with something like a TV to see if it's the GPU or monitor at fault.

You can convert digital to analog by using an appropiate adapter.

Mate, there is an adaptor which actively makes the conversion from digital to analog. It looks like this:

-snip-

You got the wrong adapter mate. That one only works in cards that support analog, but yours doesn't. You need an adaptor that converts digital signal into analog signal.

This one, would work for you: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Camac-Source-Monitor-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00MCGMHW4/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1437042364&sr=1-5&keywords=Camac

I bought one of those a few monts ago cause I wanted to connect an old screen to my graphics card, and it worked like a charm.

However, you should consider buying a better monitor at some point.
